With always a big smile one of my Dad’s favorite rejoinders was “If all else fails, read the directions!”
We have e life, e mail, e biz, e commerce, and I have the pleasure to announce that we also have e manual. We have a good set of directions to help us get re orientated and recharged and renewed. And e manual sounds like Immanuel or Emmanuel which means that God is with us always and forever right with us inside us and beside us. In childhood, teenage, young adult, old adult, storm, nice day, flood, dark, light, work, breakfast, sleep, exhaustion, travel, found, lost, wandering, walking, fear, friendship, joy, laughter, tears, sorrow, earning, loss, play, loneliness, and companionship.
Romans 12 is my favorite chapter of Scripture. It is quite challenging and a summation of orders that one has to follow to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. I also love the Second Letter of Peter in it’s entirety and the last paragraph of Ecclesiasticus (Sirach) Chapter 30.
I was given a copy of the Jerusalem Bible in my teens by my parents. It sat for a long time. In college a friend who eventually went onto the priesthood suggested Bible Roulette, praying, and being still, listening to God for 10 minutes each, each day. I took him up on this and eventually my first leather bound copy of The Jerusalem Bible became pretty worn out. I have found this to be a great way to start the way and has given me such good grounding and awareness of the overwhelming Love, Power, and Presence of God.
I have since purchased a readers version of The Jerusalem Bible and eventually started scrawling my favorite versus on the blank pages and margins. It’s a treasure trove. Many mornings find me coming across one or a few that resonate and so get added to the list. My father had been the president of the Catholic Club at Harvard when he was a student. As a present to him late in his life, I typed up all of these favorite verses and presented them. After dad passed, I posted these verses up onto a blog and then kept adding to them over time.
I have at times given some copies of The Jerusalem Bible out as gifts. I find that the original version is more beautiful than The New Jerusalem Bible. I am fine with inclusive language but I find that the manner in which it was done in this New version tanks the gorgeousness of the original 60’s version. People are beautiful. I love people watching and marveling at the symphony of God’s creation. All of creation is so gorgeous at each location and scale. God is right in being particularly proud of people. We see the hand with its’ many positions and abilities to feel, hold, touch, heal, and communicate. And we do all this without an internal combustion motor or batteries, plenty of memory, and under constant recreation. When we sleep we go to God’s workshop for updating.

Your mind must be renewed by a spiritual revolution so that you can put on the new self that has been created in God’s way, in the goodness and holiness of the truth.

1 Peter 4:1-6 Think of what Christ suffered in this life, and then arm yourselves with the same resolution that he had: anyone who in this life has bodily suffering has broken with sin, because for the rest of his life on earth he is not ruled by human passions but only by the will of God. They will have to answer for it in front of the judge who is ready to judge the living and the dead. And because he is their judge too, the dead had to be told the Good News as well, so that though, in their life on earth, they had been through the judgement that comes to all humanity, they might come to God’s life in the spirit.
